Select crop for almond producer

SELECT Harvests’ almond crop is expected to be slightly larger than earlier estimates. Addressing investors in the US this week, Select Harvests said it had now forecast its 2015-16 crop at 14,000 tons, about 300 tons higher than its previous estimate.

The listed company said about 40 per cent of the harvest — which had only just been completed — had now been processed, with quality meeting earlier expectations.
Select Harvests managing director Paul Thompson said market prices had improved a bit in recent times and is now at $9 a kg.

Mr Thompson said recent rain had placed the company’s 5800 hectares of orchards in a positive position, with bud potential looking good. He said the company would plant another 1000ha of trees this year, mostly through investment by First State Super.
