Braga Organic Farms of Madera is
voluntarily recalling select packages of pistachios because of the potential
for salmonella. A routine test by the Food and Drug Administration found the
presence of salmonella in a one-pound package of raw pistachio kernels that
were bought online.
FDA officials said that to date
no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall.
The recalled nuts were sold in
retail stores in California, Oregon and Washington and through online sales
nationwide.
The recalled nuts are in clear or
green packages, with the date code stamped on the bottom of the bag. A list of
affected products and code dates can be found on the FDA’s website, www.fda.gov
under the tab, Recalls & Alerts. The products include raw pistachio
kernels, trail mix and nut mix.
Salmonella can cause serious and
sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and
others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with salmonella
can experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and
abdominal pain.
Consumers who have purchased the
recalled product should not eat it. They should destroy it or return it to the
store where it was purchased. Consumers with questions should call (855)
661-2101, 8:15 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., PST, Monday through Friday.
