On April 4-5, the Phnom Penh Post
newspaper quoted some officials and businessmen in the cashew business of
Cambodia said that the world price of cashew increased due to the decline in
supply from Vietnam and Cambodia, are bringing Again profitable for farmers
"country tower Pagoda.
In the first quarter of this
year, supply in the global market decreased by 40% due to declining production
in Vietnam and Cambodia, while demand remained unchanged.
The Cambodian ministry's output
has been steadily declining, and by 2016 it has fallen by 15% compared to 2015.
Last year, Cambodia exported a total of more than 87,853 tonnes of cashew, said
Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry spokesman Lor
Reaksmey.
"In 2016, the amount of
Cambodian exports fell due to declining production by the effects of the
divergent climate," Reaksmey said, adding that low quality cashew nuts are
selling at around $ 1 a kg.
"However, the price of
cashew is now higher due to the great demand of the world market," said
Reaksmey, the current price of low quality was $ 1.5 per kg. According to
Reaksmey, Cambodia has a total cashew plantation area of 64,840 hectares, of
which more than 40,700 hectares can now be harvested.
Chhiv Ngy, the head of the
Kampong Thom Cashew Association, said the current cashew market helps Cambodian
farmers benefit from a high income of $ 10,000 per hectare.
"The market is great and
there are a lot of people who come to our direct purchases," said Chhiv
Ngy, adding that about 4,000 farmers are joining the association.
Mr Chhiv Ngy said:
"Initially, farmers did not believe in cashew production because they were
concerned about production and consumption. But after we explained to them the
benefits that would be gained from the cashew and large-scale cultivation of
the market, we taught them how to plant them. Now we have a lot of cashew
farmers and they are happy with the profits. "
According to Ngy, growing
inexpensive, it took only a year and a half to be harvested. Each hectare
yields 3.5-4 tonnes during the harvest season from February to May.
"There are a lot of demand
from China and Korea right now, so we are not concerned about the cashew
market," Ngy said.
Mr. Chhay Leang, a cashew grower
who started on an area of 9 hectares, now has 130 hectares planted this plant.
He said: "Cashew trees are
easier to grow and bring me more profit than other crops I have cultivated,
because now the price is very good. Now we can produce large and good quality
cashew nuts, so I plan to run a processing plant soon to add value to the
product. "
